ABOUT PROJECT
Most cities around the world have adopted the concept of the smart university to enhance people's quality of life, ensure energy efficiency, and improve management services. Advanced technologies are used to provide several services within the scope of the smart city. Campuses which are accepted as small cities are suitable situations to improve.
This project, which comprises three stages, aims to develop a system including improvements in several application areas to use public resources productively.
The first stage includes the smart applications based on the Internet of Things (IoT) within the scope of a single facility, while the second stage contains the smart applications based on IoT in the context of multiple facilities and outdoor. Additionally, unlike many studies, the third stage, called the smart campus, is supported for the sustainability of a smart university with real-time data analytics, monitoring, reporting, and performance measurement module rather than a study that only develops a smart system.
This project has focused on the smart campus initiative at Izmir Bakircay University that was newly established in the scope of the scenario to find a cyber-physical system at a lower cost. For this, it is determined sub-purposes which serve main purposes like reducing energy consumption (energy domain), reducing waiting time to utilise campus facilities (availability domain), increasing staff productivity (environment domain), improving the quality of education within a classroom (classroom domain), accelerating the improvement of student and personnel, ensuring the contribution of all individuals on campus for problem identification and problem-solving (administrative feedback domain), accelerating the communication between individuals (contact domain), and analysing the data obtained from all these areas and the usage of public resources (real-time data analytics, monitoring, reporting and performance measurement domain).
The Smart University project that is planned to realise is a first for our university, and all steps taken in this scope are inceptions for our university that was set up newly.
Digital Transformation
It is the holistic transformation carried out by organizations in human, business processes and technology elements in order to provide more effective and efficient service and to ensure beneficiary satisfaction, in line with the opportunities offered by rapidly developing information and communication technologies and changing social needs.
Many organizations consider entering a digital transformation process when they incorporate new technology tools into their business processes. However, the majority of these innovations are built on existing products, services and business processes. This is not a digital transformation, but digitization or business process improvement. However, digital transformation is reshaping all business processes using digital technologies and artificial intelligence. Digital transformation:
• Automates processes.
• Improves end user experience.
• Provides meaningful analytical insight.
• When done right, it optimizes workflows, increases security and reduces costs.
We can list the components of the digital transformation roadmap as follows:
Human: With digital transformation, a workforce with different qualifications and skills is needed, and since it is important for the sustainability of digital transformation, it is necessary to have people who are skilled in information technologies and open to self-development.
Technology: In the digital transformation process, it is necessary to develop technology and innovation capacity and to establish a strong technology infrastructure. It is very important to strengthen the communication infrastructure of data, which is the most important element of digital transformation. For this, a fast and reliable internet network, additional sensors, wireless technologies and data storage systems are needed.
Strategy: University in the digital transformation process; should determine short, medium and long-term goals, list the things to be done to achieve the goals, set a goal as a vision and encourage all personnel to work by aiming to achieve this goal. Management of businesses can become complex as processes after digital transformation will become dynamic. For this reason, it is necessary to establish an effective management structure that will guide the digital transformation process. In addition, applications such as monitoring the processes and measuring their performance will optimize the said dynamism.
Digital Transformation Process
1- Planning: Collecting process requests that may be subject to digital transformation within the university.
2- Analysis: Determining the suitability of the collected requests for digital transformation processes.
3- Automation: Elimination of repetitive and time-consuming tasks and creation of automatic workflows.
4- Process Evaluation: Evaluation of digital transformation processes in terms of benefit and efficiency.
